Major Events
Noted as the Live Music Capital of the World, it’s said Austin has more live music events than anywhere else. Perhaps the best known is SXSW Conference & Festivals, which is an annual celebration of the music, film and tech industries. South by Southwest is known to bring in hundreds of thousands of people each year, from celebrities to politicians to industry leaders. The Austin Food + Wine Festival is another big event packed with tastings and hands-on demos. Crowds also flock to the UT campus on game day, where the massive stadium seats around 100,000 football fans.
Tourist Attractions
Whether you’re in search of some of the region’s most prolific nightlife, some history or some family-friendly adventures, you’re sure to find it by visiting Austin. This fast-growing city is full of things to do, see and experience, and many of the attractions are truly unique to Austin.
6th Street: Hip and trendy 6th Street is the place to see and be seen in Austin. The lively entertainment district is full of clubs, bars and live music venues. It’s not unusual to find this part of Austin packed with crowds on the weekends.
Lady Bird Lake: Lady Bird Lake reservoir looks more like a river, but it’s a great place to get out and enjoy some outdoor recreation in Austin. It’s not uncommon to find people out on stand up paddle boards, or paddling kayaks and canoes. If you don’t want to get out on the water, you can always hop on the 10-mile long Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. It winds completely around the lake and includes a paved boardwalk.
Austin Zoo: Found on the southwest side of Austin, the Austin Zoo is open every day of the week. The 15-acre zoo is home to big cats, primates, birds, native wildlife and yes, even longhorns. Each year hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the Austin Zoo.
Barton Springs Pool: Close to downtown, Barton Springs Pool is nothing like your ordinary neighborhood pool. This three-acre pool is open year-round, with clear water fed by underground springs. It includes some shallow areas for kids, some deep diving spots and some grassy hills for sunbathers. Right in Zilker Park, the pool’s known for attracting a diverse group of visitors, from families to legislators to celebrities.

Dining Scene
Austin is a foodie’s dream destination, where Tex-Mex and BBQ joints are just as easy to spot as gourmet food trucks and coffee shops. Austin’s 2nd Street District is where to go to taste-test your way around flavors of the world. From upscale burgers and inventive Italian food to taquerias and fine dining, you’ll find it all on the menu in Austin.
Professional Sports
Austin is, of course, home to the University of Texas Longhorns, but the college isn’t the only team in town. The most recent professional addition to the sports world in Austin is Austin FC. The MLS team came to the city in 2021.
